Where to start? Last summer I started having what I thought was transmission problems, but someone told me I might just need to replace my alternator. Sure enough, as soon as I replaced it everything was fine, for a while. But I have started having more and more problems since then.
It started when my ABS light came on for no apparent reason. So my boyfriend replaced the pads and checked everything else out while he had the wheels off. He said everything looked fine, but the ABS light didn't go out. The strange thing about that was that he said that when he had the car up on the lift the light was out, but as soon as he put it back on the ground it came on again. So we figured so long as the brakes were working, we would worry about it later.
Shortly after that I had the car running while waiting for my daughter, so I had the emergency brake on. After we took off we got about a half a block when all of a sudden the car went nuts!! The door locks started unlocking then locking again really fast, all the dash lights were blinking, the stereo turned off, then the car died! This all happened in a matter of seconds. The car started right up again, but then the brake light was on and has stayed on ever since.
About a month later I used my parking brake again not thinking anything of it. I went home and turned off the car. About an hour later I had to run out again and after going about 2 miles the same thing happened again, locks, lights, stereo then the car died. I was on a very busy road, going about 40 mph, so when the car died I just put it in neutral and started it with no problems. When I started it again, both the ABS and the brake lights were out for the first time in months, but the check engine light was on! But the next day the check engine light was out and the ABS and brake lights were both back on.
Thoughout all of this the tranny has also been acting up again, doing the same things it was last summer. It shifts very hard and it will only go into reverse from park, I can't have it in drive then shift to reverse and actually have it work. I have to put it in park, take my foot off the brake then put it in reverse to get it to work. And even then sometimes it seems to have to pause to think about it!
My boyfriend has checked the battery and alternator and neither of these seems to be the problem. At first I had hoped that it would be an easy fix like last summer, but that doesn't seem to be the case. We figure it must be electrical, but can't figure out what the problem is. I took it in to a tranny shop and they said that it wasn't throwing any codes!
Does anyone out there have any ideas at all???
Thanks to anyone that can help!!!
