Hey all! I finally got my Lemans! Its a 1968 with a 400 (so I'm told) in it. The car is in OK shape but needs work! What Im wondering is if there is a way to tell if its a Lemans or a tempest? Also, how can I tell if it is a 400? In trying to find the block code but with no luck. Any help (related or unrelated) Is much appreciated!!! Thanks All!!!!!

Hi there, I recommend that you contact Pontiac Historic Services. For $35 you can get your car completely documented. The best $35 you will spend. Give me a few days on the block, I have a book that helps in deciphering Pontiac blocks. I should be able to give you a good idea of what you have. Good luck on the resto.

I've got a '68 LeMans with a 400 also. As far as the motor the heads are going to be the easiest tell all. On the exhaust manifold you should see 4x or 6x. Correct me if I'm wrong but the 350's dont have that.

There will be a two letter code on the front of the block on the RH (passenger side). Then look on the back by the distributor will be the date code. It will read something like A258 for example. The first digit will tell the month, the next two will tell the day on the month and the last will tell the year. Here's a site that will tell what engine you have once you find out what the two digit engine code and date code are, http://www.metalmonsterclub.com/technique/Pontiac Engine Codes.htm. HTH

BTW 6X heads were available on 350's and 400's, I think the 4X's were too, but not positive on that. Besides that, the heads fit either engine....as well as 326's, 389's, 428's and 455's.

Thanks guys! I found the numbers on the passenger side head. I lost the paper I wrote the number down on but the letters were " ZR " I will have to get the numbers again. I will also try and get some pictures. Shes a 2dr post car. I dont have the gas tank, filler neck or sending unit for the car and am having the hardest time finding one! What year/makes are interchangable? Can I get a tank off a 69 GTO/Le mans to fit on there? I found on off this web site, here is the link:

I can find the tank for a 68 pretty easy, its the filler neck I am having a problem with!

Thanks for the help guys! I found the code on the front of the engine, its a "ZR" Code. I will have to look for the date though. I have been looking for a gas tank for the car, from what I found out, the 68 tank had 2 vents and 1969+ had only one. I cant find a 68 tank with the filler neck but have found many 69's with the neck. Will a 69 tank work? Does it have to have that second vent tube? Whats a good site that all of you have found for Pontiac parts?

I do not know about your fuel tanks. As far as parts companies, since I have a full size car I use Ames Performance and Performance Years. I am a bit limited in who supplies parts for my car. Since you have a Lemans you can also get parts from the Paddock, New Parts Depot, Year One, and Classic Industries.
