My Girlfriend Just Bought A 1997 Pontiac SunFire, and when it starts it rattles like the engine is rattling inside, it just lasts for a Sec, it doesn’t sound like the Rod. But it doesn’t sound Natural. but then again i have never had any thing made by GM. We just got It today and on the lot it sounded fine, it has a carfax history report and was inspected by a mechanic provided by the dealer. Both said there was nothing wrong. WHAT COULD IT BE ( Please don’t answer if you don’t known what’s wrong or you suggest to go to "...Um I think its called a person who fixs cars".....a mechanic inside joke)
Also Check Engine Light Comes On, I think its what it is, the car didn't come with a manual.Another question i think its ETC off light, How do you turn the traction on if needed

Rattle or more of a tick? Rattle at idle and a pinking noise when reved could indicate a poor grade of Fuel being used, first check manufactures specs for Fuel grade example, Ron 91 / 95 or 99.

Ticking rattle could be hydraulic cam lifters, common problem when cold if they are fitted.. try checking fuel first..

I had a 2000 pontiac sunfire and had the same problem. It was a fault fuel line. It wasn't that expensive to fix, but honestly, I say you claim the lemon law and return it. The car was crap...I had so many problems with it. In the end, I was literally putting around $1,000 in it every few months. Once those cars hit 100,000 miles they literally fall apart.
