I recently purchased a 1986 Fiero 4 Cylinder 5 Speed. I got it really cheap so I'm not surprised that the engine (maybe?) is acting a little weird.

I don't know if anyone has any experience with the same issue but this is what happens.

When I shift into gear it will take its time to accelerate and then the engine will start roaring like its redlining a split second later. It does this in every gear almost everytime.

Any advice?

Sounds like a clutch issue. Slipping really bad and now just not engaging.

Sounds like you might have a bad slave cylinder and/or clutch.

Is there any way to confirm a bad clutch or slave cylinder?

It started to give off a burning odor last night after I shut it off.

This is unrelated to the issue at hand, but can anyone explain to me what the switches and buttons are for?

Wont let my upload the pics for some reason, but there are two switches next to the gauge clusters on the dash. There is one above and one directly below. (I was told the top one turned on the radiator fan, in that case I don't think it works.)

There are also two orange buttons right in front of the cigarette lighter and switch I assume goes to it.

Master/slave cylinder problems will not disengage. clutch assy or disk worn out will not engage. The burning odor is from the disk slipping on the flywheel/pressure plate.
on my '85, the top button is rear deck release and the lower is rear window defroster.

So the problems are all of the above or at least one of the issues? Should I just go ahead and replace them all while its already being worked on?

Aside from the clutch and/or slave cylinder and flywheel, its got 106K miles on the car and the engine seems like a strong Iron Duke. Hasn't leaked or burned oil while I had it, so I think Its still worth dumping money into.

It would have been a lot easier if I could have just thrown fresh paint on it and started cruising, but sometimes if it seems like too good of a deal, it probably is.

Sorry, those are NOT factory switches.
I take it that you don't have power windows, you have to open your engine lid with a key, and you don't have a rear window defroster. Right?

Those swiches you posted look to be aftermarket homemade. Maybe they are the ejector seat buttons on the center consel :) and I have no idea on the dash. The dash switches are usually where the electric trunk release factory switch is located and an optional factory rear defrost switch. At least that is where mine are on my GT.

I wouldn't worry about the master/slave cylinders. replace the clutch disk, pilot bearing and pressure plate. the switches, all four, are Previous Owner mods. if the PO didnt tell you, start following the wire.

Im acctualy having the same problem with the revving upon start, it idles at about 3500rpm just after start. Im also getting that burning smell, the accelerator takes a second to engage and when it does it revs pretty loud. I, myself am trying to figure this out. However. I just bought this fiero (The exact one you have) and the previous owner had just replaced the clutch. So im not sure that thats the problem. I think it mught have soemthing to do with the throttle cable.

Unless something wasn't hooked up or damaged, the clutch really shouldn't have much to do with the idle. Throttle cable could do it, verify that the throttle linage is actually coming to rest with the idle adjustment screw.

I was planing on checking to see if the cable was tight tomorrow. I rattled around the assembly for the throttle and it seemed a bit loose.
