my friend is a mechanic but he thinks my car has a bad gas tank filler neck. but heres whats going on. at first kept thinking its the gas cap since its the evap p0440 code but we have replaced it once already. last mpg reading was 25 but max is 30 but once i got 36( i keep thinking now i should be getting this mpg). also one time it was reset by unplugging battery and its was off for almost a week(that tells me its not gas cap) then turned back on while driving. my brother thinks though that im running rich or using more gas than it should. im going to look at the filler neck and see if its rusted or bad and go on from there. but help me out if you guys can. also 8/13/13 was last fill up and as of right now its half way empty.

Idk way the filler neck looks rusty could be that. I would like to check the rest of the stuff for the code but light hasn't came back on yet so I'm pretty sure it's not the cap but I have pictures on my phone incase you guys wana see

If the filler neck has hole in it the code would be thrown otherwise look elsewhere. The purpose of the smoke test is to find leaks.

is the canister purge valve part of evap? If so how do i check that/wheres it located. it would make sense because it may be using more gas than normal. i dont think theres vacuum leaks i dont hear high pitch whistles.

Look in the rear in the region of the gas tank, you may want to pick up a Chiltons or similar manual for your car.

I have the Pontiac manual. I can upload pics just for you guys to see

i have found a plug that goes into the canister that was loose. im not sure what it goes to but it said fuel flammable i figure its what could be whats wrong but ill know when i drive tomorrow see if it turns off
