Yesterday I drove my 1991 White Sunbird convertible home. It drives fine but the previous owner said that every couple of days the car will simply start to chug-a-lug. He said it'll still go ok but it seems to miss for awhile. Then after it sits awhile it'll be all right for miles.
He has replace all kinds of stuff: plugs, diet. cap, plug wires, O2 sensor, and I think he said he replaced the computer also. Now there's water dripping from around the water pump but it appears to drip much less when the car is running. I guess my first repair is the water pump.
The previous owner also ripped out the ignition cylinder because something went wrong with the last one and now you have to use a small drive socket tool to start it. He said that I can get an ignition cylinder for 20 bucks or so at the auto parts store. He gave me some kind of pin from the ignition and said I should keep it to repair it when I get the new cylinder.
Also, the prev. owner said that only the drivers window goes up and down and if the small back windows go down they'll probably never go up again. The convertible top is still good though and he said it'll go up and down with no problem. The a/c works great and is very cold, heat works too. Only the right half of the dash lights work, the left side where the mph is displayed is dark with no light.
Well, I have a lot to work on and a lot to mess around with. The good thing is this: I drove it home around 50 miles yesterday land it drove great! Didn't overheat, no missing or sputtering. As far as going down the road it acted great. It hasn't showed me the engine chug-a-lug/hesitation problem that the previous owner told me about.
Anyway, this is my first major post here on the forum, it'll be great to meet you guys and I hope to become a much better Sunbird mechanic. Thanks.
Oh ya, what should I work on first? I would think that I need to change out my water pump because of the water leak. I was told their only around 25 bucks...
thanks!
