knocking only when accelerating???

Ok i am thinking about buying a 96 grand am gt and when we test drove the car the guy selling it said that it made a clicking noise when you pressed on the gas only when it was in drive and on the test drive it did just that, it made a very loud clicking/banging noise under the car towards the front when you went to accelerate and the clicking picked up speed with how hard you accelerated but when coasting or idling it made no sound. i really like the looks of the car and the guy says it is the transmission and he will change the tranny but i was just wondering if that is even what the problem is? any help would be greatly appritiated, thanks.

There are many possibilites and without seeing the car it's anybodys guess. Do not buy the car unless the current owner fixes it, you do want to find out the repair is extremely expensive after buying it
