lowering a grand am gt?

i want to lower my 2003 grand am gt an inch or 2.. is it a good idea?
ive heard its not. but ive heard its a good idea if i want it done. wat i wana do is cut the springs and go from there.

It has to be done correctly otherwise you may not be able to adjust your front end alignment if the car is too low
