Hello all :) new to forum & new to Pontiac....can't say it's been good so far lol!

Anyway, I have a 1997 Sunfire with the 2.2 that we aquired a couple months ago. We knew it had some issues, but not to the extent of what we've encountered. We have pretty much rebuilt this entire motor & it should run for another 100,000 miles or so when finished :-/ here's my problem....the main bearings are shot....as in the thrust bearing should have an oil hole & it has welded itself closed completely....lovely huh? So, all the other bearings have lined up & went on perfectly except this thrust bearing. It has lipped edges & will not slide onto the seat. I know these are the correct bearings so this has me at a loss....it will not fit. Any help would be appreciated!

This link is a rebuild of a 2.2 and has some shots of the installed mains. You are using a brass hammer or a piece of wood to tap it in? The bearing looks exactly like the old one?

The lipped edges have been sheared off it looks like....the thrust bearing is seriously that bad. I thought to try to tap it in with a rubber mallet, but I admit I was a little hesitant too swing as how they're aluminum. Didn't want to break them. Maybe I should try that.

Sorry....I don't see a link....all the old bearings are the same except the thrust bearing. It looks as if the lipped edges have been sheared off.

Try the various parts sites, rock auto, autozone etc. Are you 100% positive you were given the correct bearings? What make and part number are they. I would also compare them to another set in case they were returned parts and something got switched.

Yes I've compared sets & even compared to what I found online. They're all the same. The ones I have are Sealed Power part #7047.

No markings on the old thrust bearing?

Yes it's stamped GM45 24576567. When I try to find a bearing with that stamp....I'm not finding anything. The new one is stamped 3797RAA STD. This is the only set I've found that they sell as replacement bearings.

and it's definitely the 2.2 not the 2.4?

with the engine upside down and standing in front of the engine the thrust bearing is on the back position with the oil hole facing to your right?
