ok...to start off my 93 firebird v6 3.4 ltr is not shifting into 3rd gear, it will shift through 1st and 2nd, when it gets to 3rd it shifts into neutral(Suggestions???). My car also runs extremely hot, the fan kicks on at about 250 which i know is not normal what so ever(maybe a new thermistat???) the battery is brand new, but the only way the car will start after driving is if it is completely cooled down or if i have jumper cables and a little luck. Will someone please give me some knowledge on these subjects, i love the car to death and i would like to keep it around for as long as possible, GUIDANCE PLEASE:p

I don't know much about trannys so I won't comment on that. As far as the fan not coming on until 250, I would suspect the temp switch for the fan or the relay for the fan is going bad. I would buy an aftermarket temp switch that turns it on at a lower temp anyway, like 180, no lower because of many things but one is emissions testing. I believe the factory temp switch kicked the fan on at 226. You can find the temp switch in the passenger side cylinder head. You will probably have to get under the car to find it.
Your starting problem can be many things but it sounds like the selenoid (sp) is being heat soaked. But with a strong starter it should not effect it. You could have some dirty, corroded or loose connections on the starter or battery. I would also make sure the battery cables are in good condition. If everything checks out, your starter might be going away on you.

First, thank you for the help...i will check the switch and relay and see if i might have a problem, (any suggestions on finding the best price on line) it just amazes me that the tempreture can get up that high without kicking on, your opinion on the selenoid sounds reasonable so i will definetly have to see what i can do with that, i dont beleive my starter is bad but the engine definetly gets hot enough to cause some problems, my battery cables actually look a little shot, i was checking them today and i saw some electical tape underneath one of the heat protectors on the negitive side so ill probably invest in a couple of those to make my life a little easier. if possible can you refer me to any members that do know a little bit about trannys??? if not its alright, but thank you very much for your time its appreciated!!

I am a newbie and don't know anyone that knows trannys.

I believe Hypertech sells the temp switches.

I had the same starting problem on gp w/305 4v, even in the winter! I changed the starter and solenoid. I suspect you will find the connections at the starter a little corroded, or maybe a lot corroded. Either way when you buy a starter the solenoid is already attached. I also changed the battery cables as they were getting real hot , actually they started melting, when trying to start the car with a booster pack. Did all this at night outside while it was snowing!
Change the starter and cables and that probem should be solved.

Hey, thank you for the idea on the temp switch it actually cooled down the car a good deal, im going to end up flushing the radiator a few times and go over the hole cooling system because i have a small leak right underneath the intake(one of the cheap fittings they put on)...now the only thing i really have to contend with is the tranny, ill probably get it flushed with a new filter and censor and see what it does, if that doesnt help any im gunna have to buy another one. but again thank you for the help!

Yeah snow sucks, i know what your talking about there. I was thinking about that the other day actually i checked my battery cables and they are pretty worn, i cleaned them in some soda but i dont think it helped much so ill probably just buy new ones, the starter is more than likely shot do to the amount of heat its been through, so ill have to check my connections and see how nasty it looks, but thank you for the advice!

Be careful with those tranny flushes. Many times on a high mileage car the "crud" is what 's holding everything together. Many times after a flush the tranny will fail. You are probably better off doing it the old way. That is, change the fluid and filter, drain the torque converter too, but do all this w/o the machine.

As a mobile tool distributor, I sell these machines. Shops know it'll kill high mileage trannies but use it anyway trying to get a flush and a later rebuild out the deal. Used on newer low mileage cars on say an annual basis, the flush is a good thing.

Thank you for the advice on the flush, its just to bad that i didnt get to it before i blew the tranny so now i actually bought a used tranny with 36k off of a camaro that had been wrecked, i bought it for $400 plus $100 for the converter and also installation because the guy owed me a favor but yeah my car is sitting there and i should have it back by the end of the week, you wouldnt happen to know what a good price for a couple of new head light motors or possibly a new motor for the driver side window would you, if not its ok...again thank you for the advice
