What are all the things I can check to fix an ABS and AWD Disabled problem? I've replaced brakes and rear bearings. The current problem is intermittent. Where is the sensor on the rear differential I've heard about? I'm told it has a filter of some kind that gets dirty. Could someone give me a general run-down of things to check? And where and how to check and clean or otherwise service these components, especially this differential sensor (which I've never seen -- perhaps that's my latest problem?)

Thanks!

How do you know it's not a front wheel sensor? You can spend a lot of time and money guessing what the issue is or have it diagnosed by a shop that can interface with the ABS module.

If you have access to a multimeter, disconnect the ABS sensors and check the resistance Using the ohm scale. Should measure a few ohms to a few k-ohms. Not sure the actual value you should read, but all four should be of similar values. That's how I found out I have a bad front drivers side sensor.

where do you disconnect the ABS sensors?

There is a quick disconnect down by the wheel bearing clipped onto the lower control arm, the wheel bearing/hub comes with a 6 inch tail on it with a connector to connect to the wiring harness .

Thanks for your reply. After disconnecting from the hub, would there be another disconnect somewhere else to change out the ABS wire?

I had an ABS wire switched out on my Crown Vic once an there was another disconnect under the rear seat -- unless is it a very small replacement part just for the sensor -- what does the replacement part look like?

Is this the correct replacement part?

the posts are telling you to check the sensor in the wheel bearing not the wire harness connected to it.

forgive my ignorance, but how would i get an ohm reading on the sensor to test it if its disconnected.

you insert the probes from the meter into the harness ends of the SENSOR.

Ahh, thank you. I think I have a clear understanding to how this works now. Do I have to take off the tire or caliper to access the sensor?

No but would make it easier.

highly recommend you get you hands on a Hanes or similar manual, local libraries quite often have them.

Most auto parts stores have a code reader you can borrow for free , you can connect to your van and read your own codes, maybe your van's ecu can tell you which wheel sensor is bad, especially if you have a 4 channel abs system.
