my 2000 pontiac grand am gt cuts out when you put it in drive?

It was fine in park and fine in reverse, but more recently it has started to cut out in park. It has never cut out in reverse. This happens whether you press the gas pedal or do not. It will happen either once or many times and usually once you get through this bull the first time, it is fine for the rest of the day. Anybody know what is going on?
okay, but it has never cut out in reverse, and then it is fine for the rest of the day after you get through it in the morning. would you still diagnose that as a neutral safety switch?
