My 99 Pontiac Sunfire's gas gauge is being wacky?

I don't think it's anywhere near accurate as to the actual fullness of the tank. Is the sensor in the tank? Is this costly to fix?
 
Yes it is expensive to fix. The sending unit is in the gas tank and includes the fuel pump as well. The gas tank needs to be dropped to change the part. It will cost about $300-$400 to repair.
