My pontiac sunfire broke...

...down HELP!? I was driving and i was going down a hill i shifted into neutral to save some gas and when i shifted back into drive and press the gas pedal i realized my car had died..I managed to push it off the road..I would try to start it and it would Click but that was it..My Cd player still worked but it just wouldnt start..I have had people say it was the alternator then the starter then i had a person say my engine was shot..Anyone have any ideas?
 
try to manually turn the crankshaft by putting a socket on the balancer bolt and turn clockwise. You should encounter some resistance (compression) but you should still be able to turn the crankshaft at least 1 full revolution. Test the battery, is it OK? If the battery checks out then the starter is probably defective.
