I'm helping a widow sell a car and parts. It’s 1970 Pontiac Lemans 2 door that was bought new by her late father in-law. Her husband (a mechanic) inherited the car and began, collecting parts to do a restoration, but passed away 10 years ago. Then, with the help of a friend’s husband, she began purchasing parts to make the car a hot rod.

The car has been almost completely stripped and converted to a floor shifter. The original 350 engine is under her deck. Most of the original parts are in her basement. She purchased new almost all items necessary to rebuild the car, including the engine, transmission and interior, and spent around $38k on parts alone. There are also many parts that her late husband bought for the original restoration in her basement.

Her friend got divorced and the car and all the parts have been sitting for several years. She is finally at the point to let it all go. I want to help her get a fair price for the car and parts and have a few questions:

1. Is there a market for everything as a package or am I going to have to sort and catalog 100’s of parts and sell them individually? (I’m afraid I know the answer, but am looking for some ideas on how to handle this).

2. She has invoices for a lot of the parts she bought; I’m thinking about just asking for a percentage of the new cost? What’s a fair percentage? Does starting at 80% and work my way down to 50% sound reasonable?

3. What parts are highly sought after (or very valuable) that I should watch for?

Any advice is appreciated. The car and parts are located 15 miles south of San Francisco.

First you have to determine what the going value is for a fully restored car. Then you have to subtract the labor involved since you have a non-completed restoration. So you can take the easy way out, sell it complete at a considerable discount, or sell everything individually and hope to recoupe more of the investment . To determine the value of a fully restored car try www.nada.com consumer/classic car or www.collectorcarmarket.com . I dont think you will like the numbers, if it was a GTO buying all those parts would have made sense but not a LeMans. Good luck.

Thanks for that, but I realize she isn't going to to much selling it as a package. I see fully restored cars selling for less than $20k. If I subtracted labor to do the work, I'd end up paying someone to take it away :)

So, if anyone has any suggestions of how to see the car and parts or can answer any of the questions I posted, I'm all ears.

The majority of the parts in the pictures are aftermarket and as you stated try 80% of original cost and place them on ebay. The 502 depending on which version sells for over 11K new. The original factory parts you should keep with the car and try and sell as a bundle.
