Hi,
I just finally started working on my "new to me" fiero (86 6 cyl/4 speed tranny).
When I bought the car it only had 1st and 2nd Gear. I pulled the selector cable and found it broken in the middle.
I selected each gear at the transmission and was able to drive in each gear. (more like lug in 4th <g>)
I just bought a second-hand selector cable yesterday and went to install it today. I attached it at the shifter, ran it to the transmission alongside the shift cable and followed the instructions in the haynes manual to adjust it.
I am still not getting proper shifting. 1st and 2nd are no problem, Reverse will work if it feels like it. Cannot get 3rd and 4th reliably.
At the linkage, the shift linkage seems ok, will hit up, neutral, and down smoothly with a small "detent" feel as it passes through each range.
The selector lever seems loose feeling in comparison. when pulled to the rear, I will only feel tension right before it starts pushing the shift lever down towards the gearbox.
At the shift lever, it seems like spring tension wants to keep the lever pegged to the right.
Should there be some sort of of resistance that will allow a properly adjusted cable will strike a balance between the pull to the right from the shift lever spring and a pull to the left at the gearbox through the cable?
I am at my wits end with this car, and just don't know what to try next. I've been searching the forums but haven't really come across anything that clues me in on my next step.
I don't know how it should feel and am hoping someone can clue me in and point me in the direction I should start troubleshooting.
Thanks in advance,
Mark
