I just purchased an 86 Fiero SE with 2.8v6. I has 149k miles on it. I got it for $350 but it has a few issues. First, it has a slight bearing or rod knock. I plan on dropping the pan to check the bearings and rods. It seams to run ok. From idle, it bogs when you first advance the throttle. Also it takes awhile for the idle drop after starting the motor cold. I am guessing that the bog might be do to a bad throttle body.

It also has some clutch issues. I can not shift it into reverse. Is this likely a shifter issue our with the gearbox.

Besides this, the typical headlight issues and faded paint, its not a bad car. The under carriage, floor pans and exhaust are rust free. I removed the exhaust to gut the catalytic converter (the baffling inside was loose) without breaking a clamp or header bolt!

Any comments or tips would be appreciated.

Congrats.

The bog could be a few things. One common thing which may also correct the long high idle cold could be the tube that goes from the EGR to the upper plenum may be cracked. You can purchase a new one from www.fierostore.com
A dirty IAC valve, Dirty injectors, bad MAP sensor, slightly low fuel pressure, etc. can also cause Idle issues and bogging.

The shift cable could be misadjusted or corroded causing it not to shift into reverse. A worn clutch can cause it as well. If you can shift into reverse with the engine off it may be the clutch. If you can't check out the shift cables.

Thanks a bunch for the tips. I dropped the oil pan today so I can check the rod bearings. More to follow.
