Hello all!

I am new to the forum, and have a technical question that no one seems to have a solid answer to. I own a 1994 Pontiac Grand Am, and it has been a rock solid, very reliable car for me for over three years. I love my Purple People Eater, she rocks! But...last summer my air conditioning system developed a problem. Whenever I turn on the A/C I get a strong chemical smell within a few minutes. It does NOT smell like antifreeze, I know what that smells like. It is more of an acrid smell and almost remind me of some kind of solvent. I get a headache within seconds of it coming through my vents.

It does not happen when I have the car on vent only or when I am using the heater, just the A/C. I have consulted several mechanics and no one seems to have a consensus as to the cause of the problem. I really can't afford to have someone tear my car apart only to find it is not the actual cause of the problem. Any suggestions?

Thanks! ;)

Have you tried spraying Lysol in the air intake at the base of the windshield with the A/C running? Would you say it's a mouldy odor? Would you say it's a burnt electrical odor? Have your mechanic check the drain coming out of the evaporator core, could be blocked.
