new guy needs help!

hello everyone,,
my daughter has a 97 Grand Am and the motor (2.4 dohc) locked up..
found one(86k) but all I've read is that these motors are junk???
can I take the motor out from the top? (automatic)
without taking the trans with it? what do you suggest I replace with the motor out?(waterpump,sensors, timing belt,thermostat????ect)
any help is appreciated,, new at this front wheel drive stuff..I tried searching the site before posting and didn't find much
man these kids are killing me

2.4's have a timing chain. At the least, inspect it and the temsioner, and do a water pump. These are not bad motor, they just got a bad rep from early head sealing issues. Keep it full of oil, and don't overrev it.
