Hi everybody. I'm Annick, have owned a fiero since 1984 and still have it, though it has gone thru several sets of switched parts and engines (they say you need at least 2 - one to drive, andone for parts...How true !) Through the years, it has been a 4 speed, a 5 speed, back to 4 speed. Love this car and don't want to give it up BUT....
I have two big issues. The more puzzling is the starter problem: Sometimes it kicks in at the first turn of the key, sometimes not so much as a click or a hum other than the fuel pump testing itself. I open the hood, get a piece of Re-bar and hit it a few times, and it starts just fine. Doing this about every other time...I have had the starter checked and/or replaced a couple of times, mechanic has checked wires, changed ignition switch - still doing it. I'm thinking a weak solenoid spring - since the solenoid also checks fine at the shop. WHat could be the problem ??
Second problem is hanging and VERY hard shifting. Can't get in reverse with engine running - very bad because if I forget to do it before i start the car and have to shut the car off, it many or may not start again !!!. Again, have switched transaxle with another car's recently - same symptoms. Once upon a time, I had placed a longer rod into the slave cylinder - but was told the clutch never disingages and wears out faster - so not a good idea. Master cylinder was replaced with last engine & transmission switch. Mechanic says it's in the clutch 'cause the pedal had to drive all the way to the floor - but I've had similar problems with other transaxles...
