Drove the 02 sunfire last night. There was no light around auto shift indicator area and nothing on the dash to show what gear you were putting the car in when in total darkness. From P to R or D etc

Is there a bulb somewhere that needs changed near shifter or is there suppose to be place up on dash?

Thanks for helping us learn this new to us car for my new driver in the house.

bulb is probably burnt out in shifter

Is there a trick of getting inside the housing to find the bulb to replace?

i found this on another site

Take out the center console. i didnt take it completely off the E Brake, just took out 4 bolts and lifted it up. to get to one of the bolts you will have to pop off the square where the power window buttons are. you will see wires that go into a plastic box right beside the shifter. it you turn that the bulb will come down and you can stick in a new one. the bulb is a 194. then you just put the bulb back up in there, bring the console back down and put the bolts back in and you're good to go

No power windows here, so I guess I can skip that part.

Thanks.

Just so it is logged to help others.

1 bolt is upfront of center console in the front tray under plastic cap. 1 bolt is under PW switch area or what I call change dish in non PW console, 2 bolts inside rear console box. Lift ER brake to straight up position or close to it. Console will slide upward and bulb socket is on left side near middle and front part of shifter area.
