I was driving on the highway and the speedometer started to jump around and finally quit working, at pretty much the same time, the tranny seemed like it went out, no movement. I pulled onto the shoulder and had to rev the engine about 4500rpm to get any movement but seems stuck in 1st. Changed tranny speed sensor and nothing changed. The car is a 1997 Grand Am, 2.4l, and was using it as my work car and would like to have it back, but don't have a lot of money to fix, so any advice what I could try to get it up and running again would be appreciated.

Did you check the fluid level? When is the last time you changed the fluid and filter?

the fluid level was fine, and I changed it after this happened thinking it may be a plugged filter but nothing changed. The fluid looked fine, and didn't smell burnt.

changed it after this happened, was full and looked fine

Have you checked the wiring for the vss? The tranny doesnt know what to do with no vss.

I tried checking voltage both at the sensor and the pcm and had trouble getting a reading, but I am not sure I did it right.

I'm pretty sure it's a pulse reading and you'll need a scope or a scanner that can do real time readings to show what if any signal the VSS is giving as the vehicle moves.

all I have is a standard multimeter with straight probes, and am on a very tight budget so it is probably time to sell it for parts.
