Hello fellow Pontiac enthusiasts,
I am posting today to ask for your help in figuring out my problem. First the background information, then the issue I'm facing. I bought a 1967 Pontiac Tempest Custom 4-door hardtop a couple years ago. I've since put a new Pontiac 400 engine into it -- completely rebuilt. It now has about 3600 miles on that engine. I do enjoy rolling the car around, but it surely does take a fair amount of gas getting there. Go figure.
Now my conundrum... I recently acquired a Draw-Tite trailer hitch for a 1967 Pontiac, thinking that it should fit practically any 1967 Pontiac. Well, I may still be correct in that assumption. However, I also think I might be missing a couple pieces to the trailer hitch. And this is why I am posting today... to ask for help from anyone that has ever dealt with a trailer hitch (tow hitch, towing hitch) on their old Pontiac. I need instructions and/or pointers on where exactly the mounting points are on the old Pontiacs.
I crawled under my '67 Tempest yesterday to put the hitch on, only to see that there don't seem to be any mount points where you would usually find them -- on the frame rails. As far as I can tell, the closest spot to mount to is the underside of the rear bumper. The frame rails are inside of the mounting holes on the trailer hitch. Center to center of the mounting holes is 48", and the frame rails are a good 2" inside of the mounting holes ON BOTH SIDES OF THE CAR. So you see my problem... ???
As I said, I am of the mind that I am missing some pieces. Maybe there are L-shaped brackets that mount the cross member to the frame rail on the car? I don't know. So anybody, everybody, please weigh in if you have pertinent information regarding this issue. Thank you and have a great day.
If you do not see any pictures of the hitch in question here on this forum post, please check my member photo gallery. I will definitely post some there.
