I have 2003 montana with the 3.4L engine. It runs good for 3 or 4 days then I stop at a stop light. Sometimes the engine temp will rise almost to 260 and will go back down when I start driving again, other times it will overheat. I have replaced the manifold gasket, water pump, radiator and cap. I have tried to bleed the air from system. What else could it be.

Are the fans running when it reaches those temperatures? Did you change the thermostat?

make sure the cooling system is bled all the way , or you can get air pockets and the waterpump wont work correctly .

thermostat has not been changed and how do I get all the air out of system?

one way to get all air out , park van on steep hill with nose pointing up(what your trying to do is get the rad cap highest of the cooling system and fill up the rad slowly and let the air come out ,keep starting and run heat for a few min and then check to see if your low if so fill again and repeat this process until you don't have to add any more antifreeze. be careful as not to open rad cap when engine is hot you will burn yourself. good luck and keep us posted. also i think the thermostat is located under the goose neck but hopefully someone else can verify also.

Ok I will try the hill option before thermostat...I know where the thermostat is and it is not easy to change. I will keep you updated. Thanks for the help!

There should be 1 or 2 bleeder screws one by the pump and one on the other side. My guess is the fans aren't coming on.

I tore the engine apart and the two back head bolts were not torqued to spec...torqued to correct specs and van is running fine.

strange was it leaking antifreeze ? or just getting air in the system and not being able to correctly circulate the antifreeze ? glad to hear its fixed

Not that I could see, but the as you know the engine compartment is full of components so it is hard to see. I think air was getting air in the system.

Does the van overheat easily at 40-50km/h? If it is, have your radiator checked to see what shape it's in. Had to have mine replaced a couple months ago due to said issues above.
