2000 Montana is overheating. It takes a bit to get to the first line than goes up fast to the red. It when will go down to normal, but today it didn't go down. This all after a flush. I stopped have heat unless I was around 45 mph or better so I decided it was time to flush it. Going to change the thermostat in the morning and hopee it helps for all the work involved. Also when it overheats it overflows the overflow bottle. Made me thing maybe the flush clogged up the thermostat. I also plan on renting a pressure tester to check things out. I bleed air out of the system for daus after flushing but didn't help just got worse. Any ideas that it maybe would help. If thermostat does do the trick than I will test for hydrocarbons. I reallllly hope it not that. Thanks for your read and replies.

I just changed my thermostat but it wasn't nearly as involved as yours but it did take a lot of effort to bleed the system using the breeders and squeezing the hoses..... but after 2 days all was well. Yours does sound like a stat. Good luck keep us posted.

Started it today. What a way to spend a vacation day. Would be to bad if it wasn't for the one bolt on the housing that forces you to take off the heat shield. While I was take it apart I notice oil in the air intake duct. I was covering the Intake Air Temperature sensor and one the duct and throttle body. Any ideas what would cause this??? Thanks

It's probably oil from the PCV system. Does the PCV fresh air line tie into the air intake hose?

Yes it does. So I went to change a thermostat and decided to do an lower intake gasket also since it was leaking. While in there I also changed the cam sensor since I was getting a code for it. I fix a bad vacuum line also. There's a tee for the heater I also fix since it was broke. If you find one broke also buy a 3/4 brass tee from a hardware store and foot of hose. I went to two parts store and they didn't have it and couldn't get it. Did find it online for $142 but my fix was $5 so way cheaper. After getting it all together it still overheating but atleast it taking longer now. I let it heat up to almost the red and turned it off. When I went to the engine I could here a hissing sound by the upper radiator and radiator. So tomorrow a new upper radiator hose. Big hope that solves it and its not the radiator. Will keep updated.

P.S. BTW the vacuum line was melted and mostlikely from when I hit that metal box on the interstate and riped out both battery cables. Of course when I couldn't remember where the neg. connected Steelcity went above and beyond pmed me his number and looked on his van for me and saved the day. I still had to walk 24 miles in a light rain and 40° temperature to get the battery cables because I was 40 miles from home. I haven't walked that far his my Marine Corp days ten years ago. lol

Changed out the thermostat, radiator cap, intake gasket, upper radiator hose, and fixed a leaking tee jointed going to the heater core. Still overheating. Its still not suck fluid back in from the overflow tank. When it overheats fluid is coming out the overflow tank. I was think maybe the lower radiator hose could be sucking close but want to see what you guys thought before I go throw more parts at it. Any ideas???

I want to junk this van so much but I got laid off last month so I can't get a loan for something else. Really thinkinng it the head gaskets. I live 12 miles from any town with a parts store so can't take it to get test for hydrocarbons. Just need it fix so I can start working again when I get called back or get a new job. Money running low now the I've been working on it for two weeks.

Did you ever try a pressure tester ? Leave it on over night if it shows nothing right away.

Sorry for taking so long got a broken pressure tester from autozone. Got a different pressure tester and all is good with pressure test. Thing went south when I got the block test to check for hydrocarbons. Turn yellow on first squeeze. Time to tear it apart again. Wish I would of just went ahead and did the head gasket when I had the intake off. Thanks guys.

Update: Head gasket fixed it. The back head gasket was not in back shape but the front had coolant in two cylinders. Fixed overheating and no heat under 45 mph. Of course springs here so can't take advantage of the heat.
