I have done some searching on this code. I hooked up my scan tool and had a P0440 and P0442. I replaced the gas cap and so far the P0442 has not come back. I am getting 1.6-1.7 voltage for the gas tank pressure, which is within specs. I do notice that my purge solenoid shows SHRT, which I am guessing it means a short. There are vent solenoids on my scanner. One shows open and the other shows SHRT. I am thinking I need to replace the purge solenoid, but not sure about the vent solenoid. Any ideas? Thanks.

jedeka,
I would like to apologize for the issues that you are experiencing with your vehicle. If you are unable to figure out what is exactly wrong with your vehicle I would recommend that you contact your local GM dealer and have them look into this for you. Please feel free to keep me posted and if you have any other questions please feel free to contact me anytime.
Thank you,

Not sure which generation Grand Am you have, but on the 04-08 Grand Prix, they had some issues with the vent valve. Had ours replaced and code went away, I was going to do it myself, but they said you had to drop the tank a few inches to get to it, or they could do it for about a hundred bucks, which included parts. I hate dropping gas tanks.

I tested the purge solenoid and vent solenoid and both were bad. I replaced both solenoids, along with a new vacuum hose on the purge valve. I removed the charcoal cannister and had gas run out of the hose that attatches to the vent valve. I am thinking the bad purge valve has plugged up the cannister. I tested the wiring at the solenoids and confident that the wiring is good. I am hoping a new charcoal cannister will fix the problem. Thanks.
