Pontiac Can AM

the 77 can am had the W-72 400 V-8 in them from the trans am. had the shaker hood scoop and a spoiler on the tail end similar to the trans am. rumors say the mold for the spoiler broke before the limited production # was met.-B-

I have a lot of info on the Can Am. Unfortunately, I'm typing this from work, and none of it is here. I have a book I threw together that contains a lot of articles, pictures, etc. But here's some stuff from off the top of my head.

The cars were given engine and suspension mods at the plant and were sent to Motortown Corporation for the scoop, spoilers, decaling, etc. The decision to scrap production was made due to the spoiler issue and the fact that the '78 model year was approaching (if you recall, it was a total redesign).

Two motors were available...for high-altitude and California cars, the Olds 403, and for the rest of us, the "T/A 6.6" 400, the W72 motor. W72 was a production code for an upgrade of the L78 400cid motor, which gave it a more aggressive cam, 350 heads to boost compression, etc. Most came with buckets and console, but I've seen several pictures with column shift and bench seats. Even one with buckets and console delete. The most common color was Firethorn Red for the interior, but I've seen most colors available except for green - and I don't think I want to...lol. The exterior was available only in Cameo White. The interior was essentially stock Lemans, but did have the Grand Prix dash. Again, it was available with all options or none, and I've seen several of each type.

I've even been lucky enough to drive one, as I was looking to purchase one from a man up in the Orlando area. Here's some pictures of it...he owns 4.

Found one for sale...

...and am thinking seriously of getting it. Body's in decent condition, interior will need work, but it's been more neglected than abused. Has been sitting for about the last five years, the W72 engine has about 100 miles on a rebuild, but will need at least 'freshening' to get it going. White exterior of course (Can Ams didn't come in any color other than the Cameo White), black interior. I even know where there is an entire black interior I can get. Will need a new hood or the old one repaired, a hood hinge stuck and it was bent. The guy wants $1500 for it. He is the second owner, having bought it as his first car in 1978. It has been a local car all its life. It's in the same condition, roughly, as my T/A when I got it initially.

Hi Chuck...

The post is for a '77 Trans Am, not a Can Am. I'm looking for one of those myself, and hope to have one this year. If you're interested in the Trans Am, send me a PM. I still have it, a few have expressed interest but no cash has seen it's way to me yet, so it's first-come, first-served. I may list it over at the Performance Years and Classical Pontiac sites, since they seem to get more traffic.
