My 69 Pontiac Lemans fuel gauge is stuck on full. I found a brown wire that is not hooked to anything in the trunk. Can anyone tell me what this wire is for? Thanks

The gauge being stuck on full is indicative of a poor ground or no ground. The ground wire should be attached to the frame on the area of the tank.
Concerning the trunk wire, you dont see an unplugged connector on the driver's side towards the wall between trunk and passenger side?

No wire located on the back wall. Looks like the loose wire is coming from the front of the car and come out from the harness in the trunk.

Would it be for a trunk light that may have been removed?

Test with a voltmeter or test light. If it has power with the ignition off it could be a trunk light.

it could also be license plate light if so equipped. nothing to do with fuel sending unit .float probably stuck or bad sending unit .

As previously said if the gauge is ready off scale full it is usually a bad ground on the sending unit. It could be a bad sending unit, but either way the fuel tank may need to be removed to repair it.

It could be as easy as corrosion under the ground wire to frame connection, or a broken ground wire. But you won't know until you get under and look.
