I have a pontiac sunfire 1999 two door, not gt or anything. It generally rests at 600 RPMs and sticks around 1200-2500 RPMs while I'm driving. However, over the past year I began to notice a small problem. Occasionally when I put my foot on the gas pedal from a stopped position, the RPM meter will rise, but the car won't go. Generally I took my foot off a quick second and accelerated again and the car moved just fine. However, in the past two weeks, the car has been getting significantly worse, and after 45 minutes of driving in a day will lurch when I'm decelerating, randomly jump up to 4000 RPMs while I'm coasting and put my foot on the accelerator a little bit to maintain speed, and also occasionally fizzle out when I go to accelerate from a stopped position. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

sounds like a problem with the clutches in the transmission. automatic i'm assuming? a new transmission ould remedy the problem, i had this on my old 99 cavalier and fixed it putting the transmission in. send me a message and i can help you a bit more, is it a 3 spd or 4 spd with overdrive. more simply put, does the gear indicator say 1-2-D-N-R-P or 1-2-3-D -R-P?
