I have a 1997 Pontiac GTP and I've been filling up with premium gas because it's supercharged. It's pretty expensive and I'd like to fill it up with regular unless that'd hurt it. I'm ok with using premium but if I don't have to, I wont.

Sure you can fill it up with regular gas it wont hurt your car at all but you will notice less power because your car is designed to run premium but no harm will be done

BTW, make sure u run ur car to the last drop of your premium fuel until the car stalls out due to being empty, then fill it up with regular

you may or may not have some starting issues at first but just keep attempting to start it maybe after 5 trys it will start

Premium fuel is recommended for supercharged vehicles to help prevent detonation (knock). Your engine has a knock sensor that will cause the PCM to retard engine timing if it detects detonation so if you run regular gas, it probably won't run nearly as well, especially if you get down hard on the throttle. If you must run regular gas, you might want to find to sort of octane booster to use with it.

msmith that wont happen,

i had a 1998 gtp supercharged 3800 series running regular fuel but it was recommended premium.

detonation only really happens on the newer supercharged cars, a gtp will handle fine with regular you will just notice less power

Of course you'll notice less power especially under hard acceleration because the engine is retarding the timing to prevent detonation. If you drive the car easily, it might not be a problem. I just don't recommend running a boosted engine on anything less that 89 octane fuel, and neither does the manufacturer.

ETA: that's why I don't own a turbo or supercharged car now, I don't want to have to pay the extra for premium fuel.:)

Thanks!

Well, if I'm going to end up with less power then I'd rather suck it up and continue to pay premium.
Thanks for all your help!
