I recently purchased a 2001 Aztek Gt with 161,000 miles. Yesterday, I was driving and at times, could not get the vehicle to accelerate past 45 mph. I had my pedal to the floor but the rpms stayed at 2000 and the speed would not go up. I let off the gas pedal and pushed it again, and sometimes that would relieve the problem, other times it took a couple of tries taking my foot off the pedal. It seemed to get a little better the longer I drove. Today, my husband had the same problem, but also had a problem with the car starting at 3000 rpms, and also the car accelerating by itself. He was thinking the fuel filter or cat. Has anyone else had a similar problem? Thanks.

As richardgriese has mentioned the TPS throttle position sensor may be worn or defective,
Its best to keep the problem simple and start checking the basics, look and listen for vacuum leaks, scan the computer for codes,
To test a TPS your best taking it to someone that has a lab scope that can detect even a minor drop off during the idle to wide open throttle sweep. a DVOM is good for obvious problems so if you connect a DVOM and it looks good seeing the voltage go from .5 volts up to 5 volts I think your TPS is most likely good, yet you will not know for sure until you hook it up to a lab scope.
This being said if you connect the DVOM and get a high reading with the key on engine off its pretty much a safe bet to replace the TPS.

Again keep it simple and well do what we can to help.
