Problem with the head beam switch on a 1997 pontiac sunfire?

My boyfriend owns a 1997 pontiac sunfire and has recently had a problem with the switch that turns the head beams (high or low) on. He can pull it forward and turn them on but the switch will not lock into place.

Any ideas?

when you say forward, do you mean towards the front of the car? If so and it does not stay in that position the switch is broken and has to be replaced. If you mean he pulls the switch towards the back of the car and it will not lock, it is intended to only flash the highbeam not lock.
