Having a problem with the shifting, started yesterday while driving, put the transmission in D and it acted like neutral had to put it in 3rd to make it go, didn't do it again until the next day then it wouldn't go in Reverse or D, managed to back it out the driveway and it wouldn't go in D but would move in 3rd tried to back up again (nothing) put the shifter in Park and then it would not move at all and when I shut it off it would not start and all the gauges and lights went out just like having the battery go dead and yet turn the key off and back on all the lights come back on (every thing works) had a mechanic put a diagnostic reader on it and every thing is normal, car is now dead in the water, has anyone else had this problem. checked all the fuses and they are okay

Ok to have a remote chance of helping you, we need more information.
what is the year make and model of your car, what size engine does it have?

Did the mechanic make no attempt to help you determine why the car now does nothing? Did he check the battery connections and perhaps determine battery voltage?
Your initial problem with the shifting could be a bad shifter cable or an internal problem to the transmission or an electrical issue. Did the diagnostic scanner only look for engine codes and not transmission codes?

Shifting and starting

Sorry about the year and make it is a 2001 Pontiac Aztek, Problem fixed it was the Shifter Module, I guess this is the brain for the Transmission Replaced the unit and away we went. the diagnostic tool didn't bring the problem up, it was the Haynes repair book that most of the info came from. Very helpful even though it was a book about the Pontiac Montana book it seems that this is a very common problem as the Auto parts store has sold 60 of them this year.
Thank you anyways for getting back to me so quickly:):)
