How much trouble is it to pull the cylinder head? Does the engine need to be removed or can it be don while its in the car? I have the chance to buy a 97 grand am in great cosmetic condition that needs a new head and a waterpump for $500. Just trying to see if its worth it. I know the cylinder head with install kit will run about $550 shipped. The water pump is probly in the $120 range. If I can do the work myself relatively quickly it would be worth it. Just need to know how long it will take.

Which engine? V6 or 4 cyl?

4 cyl, not bad, V6 can be a pain. If the price is right, and you have the time and $$, and it is worth it to you or you can sell and make some $$ on it still, then go for it, else, just buy one that is ok and save the time and effort.

I found I just have to weight it out and always, put a value on your time. It IS valuable.
