Hello,

I have a 97 Grand Am SE and had the heat gauge spike up on me today while I was driving on the freeway. The check engine gauge then also came on. I pulled over at the immediate next exit, and once I got to the end of the ramp, the car died. I pushed it out of the way, then left to run a couple of errands, and came back to it about 3 hrs later. The car then started up, but took a little bit of effort to get it going. I was then able to drive it fine, but the tempature gage was going nuts the whole time. It would spike to be up at the top of the red, then I would stop and let it cool. The temp gauge would then drop down to the middle of the gauge, like normal, and I would proceed. I then had the gauge spike up again and then drop all the way down to the bottom, as if the car was turned off. Also of interesting note the check engine light was off when I went back and started the car after it had died, but it came back on after I had driven the car for about 2 miles. Once I got it to the place I could leave it until I have a mechanic look at it, I could see under the hood it was smoking. I lifted the hood and there was a fair amount of smoke coming from the right hand side of the engine (if I am facing the car, left side of the engine if I had my back to the car and engine). Any incite as to what I might be looking down the barrel of would be very helpful. Thanks in advance!

Nick

Depending on which engine you have it probably is a head gasket or intake manifold issue.
your best bet would be to have someone look at it localy as diagnoiseing things over the internet is Tough at best ..
