My radio in my 84 pontiac feiro show the clock and let's me set the time but when I try and push the power botton nothing happens

Did you check the fuse, 4th row from the top towards the center to see if it is blown?

Then there is a good chance the problem is internal to the radio

They do have an internal fuse if you feel confident enough to open them up and check that. There were plenty of times I have done this but often it will just blow again due to the underlying issue but you may get lucky. What happens is if the car hasn't been run in a long time the capacitors inside need to be reformed properly before applying power and most people don't do that they just start the car and the radio see's full battery voltage without any current limiting to help slowly reform the oxide layer. I have seen capacitors go full short circuit for a very short period of time when first powered up after long periods, this is what pops the fuse but after a little longer time with power the caps come back to life after they reform their oxide layer. This is the case where if the internal fuse is blown from this then replacing it may do the trick and the radio will work fine. But, these electrolytic capacitors have a finite life span and should be replaced anyway due to age. Usually when I repair old radios like this I not only repair the problem I also do some maintenance while in there like replace those types of capacitors so the unit will have another long healthy service life.

Most radio repair places will have "tiers" of service like this but it can get very expensive. First tier will be just a repair and that can run you $100 alone, then with the added maintenance which brings you into a second tier of pricing can be getting up near $200. Capacitors are super cheap these days, I mean literally $.25 each and there are about a handful of them in there that should be replaced so the parts cost isn't much. Even if you have some blown transistors they are cheap also, it's the labor that they get you on.

If you can't find anyone that will service the radio let me know. I am in New Hampshire and have been building electronic equipment including stereos and ham radios along with restoring and repairing them for a very long time. My two areas of expertise are cars and electronics.
