Alright, so for the past couple of weeks I've been dealing with issues with my car's cooling system. It's a little bit of a long story, but I'll try to summarize.

I have a 1994 Sunbird LE.

When I bought my car, it didn't have a thermostat installed. It never really occurred to me until I realized where the thermostat was supposed to be, as I also noticed dash temp gauge was reporting that the car barely ever floated over the first mark. I purchased a Stant thermostat, and installed it. For about a week this seemed to work alright, but then last Friday when I had just got home from the store, steam started rolling out of under the hood. The temp gauge barely said I was over the 1/4 mark.

Apparently, the radiator cap never gave way, but steam had finished off the worn thermostat housing gasket. I assumed this mean't the thermostat was sticking, so I ordered an ACDelco thermostat, instead, to replace it.

After replacing the gasket, installing a new coolant temperature sensor, and installing the new thermostat, it seems to be reporting the correct temperature. However, whenever the thermostat appears to open, the temp drops rapidly down to the 1/4 mark (maybe about 140 degrees), and then back up to the middle mark (about 200 degrees). It keeps doing this as long as I'm driving. It even does this when at idle, although slowly.

While it was sitting at idle, I checked under the hood and it also appeared that there was a steady stream of steam spraying out from around where the upper radiator hose attaches to the radiator.

Not really sure what else could be wrong at this point. Ideas?

sounds like you have a leak where the hose attaches and have air in the system

Now that I think of it, it would make sense for there to be air in the system. Probably getting sucked in through the makeshift coolant recovery bottle in my car. :D It never really seems to hold any amount of fluid very long, but I stopped the only notable leak (apart from, maybe, that hose) in the system. Maybe it will now.

I'll burp the car later today and fill that can up a good amount. I'll be back with results.

Alright, well I finally got around to burping the system and replacing that hose...although I also ended up replacing the radiator, since it started hemorrhaging coolant when I was driving across the state.

I bought/installed a new radiator on Saturday, as well as replaced the upper radiator hose. The lower radiator hose now needs replacing, apparently, since whatever was keeping it sealed at one end is no longer, although its not too bad...not as bad as the other hose was, anyway.

Anyway, the car doesn't overheat. The thermostat opens up as it should around 195"F, but when it does, the thermometer in the car dips about 50 degrees, slowly climbs back up, and this slowly seems to stop being as frequent after driving for an extended period of time. Seeing how it goes by the temperature of the coolant in the engine, should I just assume this is normal behavior at this point? It don't matter if I'm going 60 mph down the highway or cruising around town, it just reads this way.

EDIT: I realize the last paragraph describes the same behavior I described initially. Although I forgot to mention that previously the car would occasionally climb over 200"F and onward, nearly overheating, at times. That is no longer an issue.

sounds normal to me

not to highjack the thread, but im dealing with same issues. Got new thermastat and sensor and the car still over heats. just jumps up to red line as soon as im at idle or even out of the blue driving down the road.

would a leaky headgasket be the problem? Its leaking from the headgasket coolent a bit at a time.

I'm having hot issues too. I just replaced the water pump and thermostat in my 98 sunfire but still running hot but not over heating. Resevoir is full.I looked under the hood and my fan ain't working! So now I gotta screw with that!

It seems many of us are having the same problems. My situation is so bizarre I'll start a new thread in hopes that it will help many of us having these cooling problems...
