Hi,

I have a 2000 Pontiac Montana that I bought a couple of years ago. A couple of months ago, I took it in to a franchise (Monro) when the check engine light came on and was told that it needs a new catalytic converter "from the manifold on back" (exact words) and that the muffler is also part of that, for a cost of $1,700 up to $2,000. I wasn't charged anything for the test (some auto shops charge for that). After looking online for what I could find for parts (my knowledge is extremely limited when it comes to car repair) and labor, it seems pretty inexpensive, or am I completely wrong on that? I work from home, so I rarely use this vehicle, basically to the store and back. However, I expect to move within the next couple of months and I would like to get a general idea of what it would cost to repair, or if I should.

Thanks. Jane

Definitely get a second estimate. Also ur exhaust pipes and muffler maybe OK to reuse . Go to someone u trust. That price sounds real high. Perhaps try a non franchise shop lime a mom and pop shop.

I would be very surprised if even a new car Chevy/Buick dealer would charge that much. I would definitely get another quote.

Thanks for your response. I moved to the area about three months ago so haven't found a shop I can trust yet. My upcoming move will be in the general area. If anyone in this forum is in the Dayton, OH area, and can recommend a trustworthy shop, please let me know. Thank you.

First of all any Major auto parts store can read the codes for you and most do it for free!!

And I would look up the local Race scene most of whom there going to recommend for exhaust work will be some of the best in area. If you even need it. It might be a bad o2 sensor or ???
