This is in a 2008 Pontiac Torrent SUV. I had the radiator over flow tank replaced, there was a crack in it, the heater core was flushed then blown out. The motor runs just fine. The temperature gauge stays at the half way mark no matter if it is like 105f outside and the A/C is on. This winter that just passed. There was hardly any heat coming out. On my old 1969 Chevy 1/2 ton pickup. I had changed out thermostat before I got heat in the cab. Where is the thermostat in my SUV and is it hard to get to? If the thermostat is ok then what? replace the heater core?

the video below shows how to change it.
When completely cold is the over flow tank at the proper level of coolant?

Yes the coolant is at the proper level in the over flow tank when the motor is cold. I had to keep an eye on the engine temperature especially in the summer time. I didn't know it at that time that there was a crack in the over flow tank. When the mechanic flushed and blowed out the heater core. He found the crack in the in the over flow tank. The over flow tank was old and warn out. The tank was replaced. I still watch the temperature gauge in the summer. Summer 2019 will be the 1st summer with the new over flow tank in place. With the heater core flushed out. Am I on the right track about the thermostat? My degree is in electronics not car engines. I had to learn in the school of hard knocks about keeping up on car repairs to avoid a breakdown on the hiwy.

The thermostat could be partially or completely stuck open. If it is not obviously stuck open when you remove it try inserting both old and new thermostats in a pot of water that is just below boiling to see how they react and slowly bring the water to a boil.

I will let you know the outcome of the thermostat test. By the way the thermostat is the same one that's been in there since I got the SUV about a year and a half ago. How long that thermostat has been in there is anyones guess. I mite as well just put the new one in while the housing is open. It can't hurt anything, and it probably will help.
