Rear shocks

I have a 2002 Montana, and I'm pretty sure with the mileage the shocks need to be replaced, especially considering how rough all the bumps feel these days. From the searching in these forums I have done, it seems that it is quite possible to replace the auto-leveling shocks with standard non auto-leveling shocks. Before I do that however, can some one help with troubleshooting why they aren't working? The pump doesn't seem to be working but I'm not sure if it is the pump or the leveling switch.
