People,

1987 sunbird, headlight door motor, I took it apart and installing new plastic cylinders (3 of them). But the hardest part is holding back/retaining the 2 brushes while trying to drop down between them the armature. I have done this before but forgot how to do it. What a chore. Any tips? Can I hold back the magnets/springs with tape somehow, then drop the armature in then pull out the tape? Im afraid of gooing up the magnet surfaces with adhesive.

That got me thinking- a dental pick, with twisted end, a little stiffer than paper clip! It worked! I dropped the commutator down with a bit of wiggling. With the help of a friend though, almost impossible for just one guy. Thats is done! But now, geez, the motor does not work all the time. I connected it to the 2 prong connector but that door does not operate. When connected to the battery terminals directly it also does not work except for occasionally, and then, with much grinding. More work to be done.

Thanks Doug.

Got it all together but the motor does not work. I did the recomended checks from the shop manual, and turns out the motor is bad. I am looking into replacing it. Probably not worth rebuilding it. Time to search ebay. If anyonne here knows of a decent one please let me know. It is for the LH side.
