Hello All,
First time posting here. I'm helping a buddy with his 68 Firebird that he recently purchased. It looks great, runs well with a 400 CID engine…..nothing radical. It came with a large crossflow aluminum radiator filled with EVANS waterless coolant. It does not have a recovery tank….rather expensive coolant to dump on the ground……was considering mounting a tank on the passenger side inner fender….however, a few compound curves to fight with. Suggestions for a recovery tank and mounting bracket is appreciated.

Thank you

Why is is dumping coolant would be my concern. Those tanks did not start in production vehicles till 1973. A radiator with no tank is only supposed to be filled when cold to about 2" below the neck.

Melsg5, thank you for your reply. It looks like a fairly recent aftermarket radiator install. Would benefit from an aftermarket recovery tank?

It might, eliminates normal air pocket top of radiator, but is it currently losing coolant?

I agree with installing a recovery tank regardless of whether the radiator is original, OEM or aftermarket. Doing so eliminates the air gap at the top of the radiator which is where oxidation leading to failure can occur. I add recovery tanks to all my classics. Dorman makes a good universal style tank and bracket, widely available both online and through auto parts stores. I’ve had to be creative mounting it on a couple of vehicles due to space and configuration of the engine bay but have always found a way to do it.

Melsg5, I believe when he got the car, he topped up the radiator to the filler neck. You guessed it, once the engine warmed up it spat it all out.

Classic's Fan, I think a recovery Tank is the plan. Guess what I was hoping for from the vast knowledge on this forum was some direct bolt on parts or bracket plans for that curving fender well. Unfortunately I'm not close to my own garage where I could fab something up......the simpler the better. Dorman, Canton Racing....all have some good tanks available. Thank you all for your input.

Melsg5, thank you, I'll pass along your suggestion.
