Remove outside pillars on doors

I've got four nasty, faded pillars on the outside of each door. I've tried researching how to take them off but the older forums that I've read have image links that no longer work.

I was able to find two screws underneath the interior window trim but after removing those the pillar refused to budge at all. I'm hesitant to force it any further as it feels like I might break/bend it.

Has anyone removed these before and if so how do you properly take them off?

I guess I could do it that way.
I figured it would be easier to paint them when removed but it seems harder to get them off.
