I want to put in some color inside by using seat covers. My 2000 Firebird base allows the headrests to be moved up and down, but there is no button or latch that allows them to come out, which is needed to install a seat cover. I am wondering if for liability issues, they made these non-removable.

Have you checked with the source for the seat covers, some are one piece and go over the headrest? If you are certain there are no release buttons, did you try moving the support for the headrest side to side while pulling up?

I guess I have not seen covers that went over the headrest, and I am not sure if I would like them. I did try rocking the headrest, as well as trying to pull the supports apart. On a number of the seat covers for sale, while they are for Firebirds, when you check compatibility they say it is not compatible.

The headrests are removable, on my 2000 WS6 you pull a little harder at the top stop, and they come out. At least the drivers did, I assume the passenger will too.

Update, I went out to the garage and tried. The one towards the center of the car seems like it's pulling out past the stop, but not the one on the other side. I'm sure I've had these out, tho.

You could go to an upholstery shop and ask them, and get a quote on new seat covers while your there.
