I am trying to find a direct replacement shifter for my 1968 Lemans that can shift into all 4 gears of the 200r4 I installed. I replaced the detent on the shifter to allow shifting to all 4 gears, but the slot on the original console is not long enough to allow shifting into first gear. Does anyone know of a shifter that will fit in the stock console or a replacement top plate with a longer slot? Thanks for any help.

Looked at Summit, Jegs and others, but want a direct fit into my existing console if possible. Some of these may work, just not sure. I was hoping maybe someone had done the same swap. Thanks for the reply

Icefan71 is correct, this is the part number for www.amesperf.com 68 to 75 conversion kit

R162MN 1968-75 Shifter Conversion Kit (AP) ........................... 89.00/kit
This kit converts the factory 3spd. shifter to a TH700-R4, TH200-4R, or
a 4L60 Transmission. Cable not included (original cable will work).

I used the conversion kit, but it only works for a three speed conversion, I have a powerglide 2 speed with a shorter throw. The slot in the shifter plate is not long enough. Thanks for the feedback

It may fit but in 1968 the GTO came with the dual gate shifter and that is not it.

I always thought the Duel gate was an Option in 67 & 68? I find it hard to believe that the 2bbl equipped cars had a duel gate standard. But I am no expert on 68 GTO's one of the only years I have not owned, along with 64, 71, & 74.
But I only suggested it as a solution that would work, and he would be able to use parts he already had.

the dual gate was standard on the automatic 68 GTO with console not the LeMans. The GTO had the 3 speed M40 Turbo. The shifter in the link is a correct 3 speed shifter just pointing out it was not a correct 68 piece and he probably could use it as you pointed out.

I would contact Shiftworks to ask for some advice. All they do is shifter conversions. I have a 700r4 in my 64 lemans with a shift kit from Shiftworks. Awesome company to do business with. I bought a TH350 kit then changed my mind to the 700r4. Called them 6 months later to ask for an exchange. They told me just pay for shipping and no problem. Then I had everything installed and found out I had bought the wrong shifter ( after my machanic welded the detent). Found a new shifter but still needed a new detent. Called Shiftworks back and they sent me the piece for free even after I offered to pay. Also called a few times for advice and they took pictures and emailed them to me. Awesome company to do business with in my opinion!!
