Hello everyone,
I have a 1978 trans am with 400 engine and maybe I want to change my th350 automatic for a 200-4r automatic,
Now I'm wondering how much work that is, and do I have to replace more parts?
I hope for some answers.
Thank you
Paul from The Netherlands

I did the same thing on a 1971 Camaro that had a 350 CID a few years back. You’ll need a different crossmember and mounting pad. Also a TV cable to replace the kickdown linkage. The bell housing bolt patterns for the two transmissions are the same and I didn’t have to do anything with the driveline. Finally for the finishing touch, Shiftwerks makes a kit to convert the console gear selector and quadrant from 3-speed to 4-speed auto with OD.

This was one of the best upgrades I ever made to a classic vehicle.

Multiple online sources for all of it.

Chevrolet doesn't have the same bolt pattern as a Pontiac V8, you sure he doesn't need an adapter?

My bad, you’re absolutely right. I wasn’t thinking BOP only that the two trannys had the same pattern. Thanks for catching it!

Actually Most 2004R cases are universal and with fit either Chevy or BOP engine bolt patterns, but there are a few that are BOP only. So either way if his T/A has a Pontiac 400 (or an Olds 403) any 200R4 should bolt up. Just FYI

And the speedometer cable, can I use the same that's now on the car?

The aftermarket cables are the same for both transmissions. You probably will have to change the transmission driven gear to match your rear gears.

Ok, thank you
