Replacement stereo head unit

About a month ago, my 6 disc changer switched out its last disk in my '06 Torrent. So I've been looking at replacing the head unit. Hence my questions:

It looks to be the right size, but will a double DIN sized head unit fit in there? My fiance's Cavalier has a normal sized unit in there, and a tiny shelf used as a spacer. I don't like that approach, and wish to avoid this if possible.

Secondly, there's nothing wrong with the stock speakers that came with this car's sun and sound package. With this in mind, what wattage of output should the head unit be?

Finally, is there any additional advice from folks who have had this replaced before?


Note: I'm paying someone to replace this (I was thinking Best Buy), as I'm not comfortable messing with the wiring in newer cars, nor do I feel like taking any part of my dash apart (because I can never seem to get it back the way that it used to be).

According to Crutchfield, a double DIN will fit your vehicle just fine.

Headunit replacement

Yes, it is a double DIN. I just put in a Kenwood DDX-419 6.1" headunit. Sounds awesome. You just need the dash kit. The interface to keep On-star, chimes and steering wheel controls is crazy (about $160 US but $320 in Canada!).

Headunit RMS output is irrelevant as the amp in the rear quarter panel drives the speakers. If you have the headunit replaced, ensure the installer uses the pre-amp line outputs, not speaker outputs. See the thread 'Pioneer 7 Speaker'.
