Rocker arms!?!

('97 2.2) Long story short...Noticed a lot of water leaking from the exhaust, decided to do the head gasket as the car runs pretty hot...not over heating hot but higher than it should. Haven't finished tearing it down yet but...should there be any play in the rocker arms? not back and forth play...I've got side to side movement.

when cold, slight amounts will but if you have large volumes of white smoke you have an issue which could be a blown head gasket

If you have a blown head gasket, will that white smoke go away as the engine gets warmer or will the smoke remain?

Probably remain, i suppose in certain situations the expansion from heat may reduce it, but if you have it when cold it has to be replaced.
