Rough idle, and EGR troubles

Know why when I spray cleaner into the TBI the engine stalls? Yes, I did that, about a month ago, tried to clean the tbi with FI cleaner. The engine stalls/dies out completely. Im scared to do it again......

It's normal to die out , just give more throttle when it starts to stall.

Plenty of iac valve cleaning videos on YouTube, don't forget the port it sits in also.

Don't think it's the balancer, the engine would shake all the time.

Took me a few tries to get mine to idle good, also check your brake booster hose and pcv valve, both went bad on me also.

Thanks again, Doug. Good tips. Hope it is not balancer, as impossible to find new.

To summarize, I have:

1) Hunting idle, but ONLY at idle, never while driving/cruising. Hunts from 1100 to 1300 rpm, over 2 seconds (to go from 1100 to 1300 , back to 1100 rpm). Like Tick-tock, tick tock, each tick is 1100, each tock is 1300.

2) Rough idle- most noticeable inside cab, hard to detect on top of running engine.

3)slight shaking of car during rough idle. Glove box rattles, even, along with radio, dash board in general.

4) When EGR connected, forget it- cars runs terrible, at ALL rpm's/speeds. Currently, EGR is disconnected.

Thanks.

You're chasing what I did when mine was doing it, just try everything in my last post, one of them will solve the problem.

Did you try disconnecting the Battey cables for half an hour? The car will go in limp mode for a couple of days and the idle will change ( slow down )to see if it isn't computer related.

Sounds like a good plan, Doug. No easy way around it. A good project for this weekend. I will also try the battery disconnect trick. Then, let you know what happens. Pray for me, if you are religious.

But lastly- you say if it's computer related- so does that mean if I have a bad computer the idle will NOT change? Or WILL change? I will be so happy to find out there is a way to "test" my computer.

Computer will help the idle "relearn" after driven a few days, no check engine light right now?

Idle will slow way down for a few days then go back to normal . No way to test computer unless a shop has a obd 1 tester.

Not many do anymore being old technology.

Worse senero is a cracked head.I guy on the jbody forums said he had to change quite a few, they are famous for it because of bad porous aluminum castings. Lucky for me I have 148k miles on mine but don't run a thermostat and I bypassed the the computer cooling fan system ( toggle switch) so it never gets hot.( I control the engine cooling - not the computer)

Funny you mentioned that you control the cooling, not computer, as I also have a toggle switch! But it is only as a secondary- computer still controls it. Its just that still, I dont like the computer wanting to kick on fan until the needle is way up there in temp. I keep it in the "middle" of that dial range.

Cracked head? Hmmmmm, wouldnt that mean bad oil consumption? And bad conpression? Also, loosing coolant? I dont have either, so that should rule that out, right?

Vacuumn leaks also...rough idle

Right. Have checked for that in the past with no findings. But going to try smoke machine (homemade) soon, and try to smoke out any leaks. using mineral oil, with a pump.........
