I own a 2002 Pontiac Sunfire with 130000 miles on it, automatic transmission. Not all the time but sometimes when I go uphill, and not necessarily at an extreme angle, but especially on the highways at higher speeds I notice my engine's RPM shoots from 2500 to around 4000 when I give it gas and it will shoot up and down between these RPMs every second or so and then returns to normal either when I let off the gas or I return to a flat road surface again. The car does not lose speed. What could be causing this? Is this maybe a fuel injector problem? Thanks!

No. Change your transmission fluid due to slippage.
